Is it better to sleep with one or two pillows?

Walking-Gorilla-Health-Graduation

In general, most of us tend to sleep with two pillows. We have done some research that has shown that you should only sleep with one pillow. At least under your head. The purpose of a pillow is to slightly elevate your head so that your neck and spine are aligned and your airways remain open. However, depending on your sleeping position, there are exceptions to the one-pillow rule. Find out right here how you should really use your pillows!

The right pillow

Now that the bad news is out of the way, we want to tell you that sleeping with a pillow doesn't have to be a bad thing. If you choose the right pillow, it will benefit you more than stacking pillows up to the ceiling in search of comfort. Multiple pillows raise your head too high and misalign your spine while providing little support for your neck. Pillows are often overlooked in the bedroom in favor of a suitable mattress, but they could also be the reason for poor sleep. How many pillows you should sleep with depends on what position you like to sleep in. So, what is the right pillow for you?

How many pillows should side sleepers use?

If you are a side sleeper, you can use two pillows, but please do not use both for your head. The best way to align your spine is to have one pillow under your head and one between your knees. In the side sleeping position, the leg that you lay on top can pull on your spine, leading to stress in the lower back and hips. Try using a firm pillow between your knees so that your knees do not touch. A medium-firm pillow is perfect for your head. These two pillows together will perfectly align your spine and neck.

How many pillows should back sleepers use?

As a back sleeper, you are already treating your spine much better than most others. Technically, you are sleeping in the ideal way to maintain the health of your spine for as long as possible. As long as you use the right pillows. To really relieve stress at the end of the day, try sleeping with a soft pillow under your knees as well as your head. This positioning of the two pillows keeps your spine in its natural curvature. The slight elevation of the knees while sleeping on your back also helps to fall asleep faster!

How many pillows should stomach sleepers use?

Sleeping on your stomach is considered the worst sleeping position. This is because sleeping on your stomach puts a lot of strain on the spine and pulls it out of its position. If you can, try to avoid this sleeping position. If you can only sleep this way, place a medium-sized pillow under your pelvic area. This will keep your spine in the best possible alignment that is achievable in this position. Ideally, try not to have a pillow under your head, but if you need one, make sure it is a soft pillow. Keeping your head as low as possible will help support your spine in a stable, healthy position.
